Male robber dressed as woman escapes with cash from Smithtown bank

A bank robber was dressed as a woman when he escaped with cash from a Smithtown bank Wednesday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

His note told a TD Bank teller that he wanted money and had a gun, according to detectives from the pattern crime unit. He took off about 4:05 p.m., possibly in a light-colored vehicle, heading west from the bank at 714 Nesconset Hwy., police said.

Det. Lt. Edward Reilly cited an active investigation at 6:30 p.m., as he declined to describe the clothing beyond "women's attire."

Other details were not immediately provided. Detectives ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
