Man beaten in Calverton parking lot, suspect arrested, say cops

Riverhead police have arrested a Coram man who they say beat up a 69-year-old man in the parking lot of a bagel store in Calverton Friday afternoon.

Philip Puglisi, 23, of Groton Lane was arraigned on a second-degree assault charge in Riverhead Justice Court and was being held at the Suffolk jail on $25,000 bail, police said.

The charge stems from an incident at the Bean & Bagel Café at 4426 Middle Country Rd. at about 1 p.m., when police said Puglisi assaulted a man and walked away.

Officers searched the area and found Puglisi “hiding in a wooded area of the nearby Timber Park neighborhood,” police said in a release.

The victim was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of facial injuries, police said. Information about his condition wasn’t immediately available.
