Man charged with cocaine sale outside Riverhead mall

A Hampton Bays man was arrested by members of the East End Drug Task Force and charged with selling cocaine in a Riverhead mall parking lot, officials said Friday.

Juan D. Gonzalez, 26, of Tiana Road, was arrested at the Tanger Outlet Mall lot Wednesday and charged with two counts of first degree criminal sale of a control substance. At his arraignment, Riverhead Town Justice Allen Smith ordered that Gonzalez be held without bail, pending his next court appearance, officials said.

An investigation into Gonzalez's possible involvement in cocaine trafficking began in September, according to a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota. The investigation culminated in the arrest by task force detectives in front of the Nike store, and the confiscation of 6 ounces of cocaine, officials said.

The East End Drug Task Force is a multi-jurisdictional drug enforcement unit funded by the Suffolk district attorney's office and includes law enforcement representatives from various local and state law enforcement agencies.
