A Port Jefferson man drowned Sunday after diving into Long Island Sound while boating with friends, Suffolk County police said.

Mouhamed Souleiman, 42, jumped into the water south of the Middle Ground Lighthouse shortly after noon, police said.

The current caused Souleiman to drift away before two friends also on the vessel located him and pulled him back to the boat, police said.

Souleiman was transported by Suffolk police marine bureau officers to Port Jefferson Marina, then to St. Charles Hospital in the village, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Port Jefferson Fire Department officials said earlier in the day that the man had suffered an apparent heart attack. The death, which is being investigated, appears to be noncriminal in nature, police said.
