A man who police said fell asleep behind the wheel of his sport utility vehicle early Tuesday, striking a pole and causing the SUV to overturn, had to be cut from the vehicle -- but was not seriously injured.

Suffolk County police said the single-vehicle crash occurred on Saxon Avenue near Main Street in Bay Shore at 3:09 a.m. The identity of the driver was not released.

The driver, who was pinned in the wreckage after the vehicle overturned, had to be cut out of the SUV by Emergency Service Unit personnel, police said. Police said the driver was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, but that his injuries were not considered to be serious.

There were no charges, police said.
