Man stabbed during service in St. James funeral home, authorities say

A man was stabbed during a service in St. James funeral home and taken to the hospital Monday night, authorities said.

Suffolk police said a man was stabbed at St. James Funeral Home, 829 Middle Country Rd. in St. James, shortly before 8 p.m. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

The Nesconset Fire Department responded to the call to aid a victim of violence, said Albert Anderson, the department's third assistant chief.

First responders found a man sitting on the floor inside the funeral home with a stab wound to his back, bleeding but breathing, Anderson said, describing the injury as a surface wound. A service was in progress at the time, Anderson said, but the man's connection to the deceased was not clear.

Police would not say where the stab wound was located.

A man who answered the phone at the funeral home declined to comment.

Fire officials said they believe the stab victim was involved in a dispute during the service and that police took at least one other man at the scene into custody.

The man was not identified by police. The incident is under investigation, police said.
