Volunteers from more than a dozen local fire departments were battling a brush fire in Manorville Sunday afternoon.

Officials temporarily closed northbound County Road 111 at Route 27 Sunday afternoon after the fire erupted. The road is a heavily used link between eastern Route 27 and the Long Island Expressway, particularly on Sunday evenings following a summer holiday weekends.

A Suffolk County Police Department helicopter was requested shortly after 2 p.m. to survey the fire’s direction, according to police.

Manorville Fire Department Chief Chris Lindberg said responders were "nearing containment" when he left the scene about 4:30 p.m.

No other details were immediately available.
