A Melville woman was killed in a two-car crash Wednesday afternoon after the vehicle she was riding in tried to avoid an ambulance but was struck by another car in Commack, Suffolk police said.
Barbara Weintraub, 77, was transported by Commack Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where she was pronounced dead, Second Squad detectives said.
Her husband, Gerald Weintraub, 82, and the other driver, Serap Sezer, 52, of Deer Park, suffered minor injuries and were treated at a hospital and released, police said.
Detectives said the 2 p.m. crash occurred as Gerald Weintraub tried to avoid striking an ambulance that was turning into a driveway as he drove eastbound in a 2003 Honda on Jericho Turnpike near the intersection with Wiltshire Drive.
The Weintraubs’ car was struck by a westbound 2013 BMW driven by Sezer after Weintraub swerved into oncoming traffic, police said.
Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check and police are asking anyone with information to call the Second Squad detectives at 631-854-8252.
