Michael Burwell of North Babylon charged in 3 Suffolk sandwich shop robberies

A North Babylon man has been arrested after Suffolk County police said he was responsible for the robbery of three sandwich shops from May to July.

Police said Michael Burwell, 24, robbed a Quizno's in Bay Shore on May 26 and two Subway shops -- one in Islip Terrace and one in Islandia -- on July 24. In the Subway robberies, Burwell flashed a gun, police said.

After an investigation, detectives from the Third, Fourth and Seventh precincts along with Robbery Task Force detectives identified Burwell, of 409 Wyandanch Ave., as the suspect, police said.

Burwell was arrested Tuesday at his home at about 2:30 p.m., police said. Burwell attempted to flee and resisted arrest, police said.

Burwell was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, third-degree robbery, resisting arrest and second-degree escape.

Burwell is being held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
