In a fit of road rage, Town of Riverhead police said, a Wading River man stabbed another driver in the chest Sunday afternoon and was arrested.

Michael Doroski, 25, was charged with second-degree assault after police said he stabbed Brett Penny, 48, of Hampton Bays.

Doroski stabbed Penny in the chest and left hand shortly before 3:30 p.m. along Sound Avenue at Fresh Pond Road in Calverton, Riverhead police Det. Michael Schmidt said.

The incident between the two men, who did not know each other, appeared to be provoked by tailgating, Schmidt said.

Penny was treated at the scene by Riverhead Ambulance and flown by Suffolk County police to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he remained in stable condition Sunday night, Schmidt said.

Doroski surrendered and awaited arraignment Sunday night.
