Police: Man dies in crash on Rte. 347 in Hauppauge

A two-car accident at the intersection of Route 111 and Route 347 in Hauppauge early Wednesday left one man dead and one woman injured, police said.

Suffolk County police said Mitchell Sussman, 54, of Sound Beach, died after the collision, which took place at 2:05 a.m. He was taken by Smithtown Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The injured woman was identified as Tara Grandinetti, 30, of Bellport.

She was treated at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and released. Her injuries were unknown.

Police said Sussman was driving a 2006 Subaru Forester east on Route 347 when it was struck by the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, being driven south on Route 111 by Grandinetti. Police said circumstances leading to the crash were still under investigation and that investigators were looking at "traffic conditions" -- for example, whether traffic signals were working properly and which driver had the right of way.

Detectives ask anyone with information about the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.

The fatal accident temporarily closed Route 347 at Route 111 in both directions before the westbound lanes were reopened at 6:30 a.m. All lanes were reopened by about 7 a.m.

The accident also closed Route 111 between Townline Road and Route 347. That, too, was reopened by 7 a.m.
