A motorcyclist was in critical condition Thursday after crashing into the back of a Ford sport utility vehicle, which then flipped onto its roof with its driver and a child inside, Suffolk police said.

Two other motorcyclists appear to have been involved in the 12:40 p.m. crash on Route 231 in North Babylon, but one walked away and was gone by the time officers arrived, police said.

At the scene, a Ford Escape could be seen lying on its roof, while two motorcycles were on their sides a few yards away.

Motorcyclist Travis Lovett, 20, of Brentwood, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, with a head injury.

The driver of the Escape, Jacqueline Morrison, 54, of Babylon, and her 3-year-old granddaughter were also treated at Good Samaritan for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Northbound Route 231 was shut down until about 6:15 p.m.

Police said Lovett was riding a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle north on Deer Park Avenue, about 50 feet north of Parkdale Drive, when he rear-ended Morrison's Escape.

A man riding a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle and a man driving a 2007 Honda motorcycle also traveling north on Deer Park Avenue could not stop in time and also crashed.

The driver of the Honda, Stanley Severe, 22, of Deer Park, did not receive medical treatment.

The driver of the 2002 Suzuki left the motorcycle at the scene and fled on foot.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
