Motorcyclist killed in Southern State hit-and-run

A 52-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a Thursday night accident on the Southern State Parkway after his cycle apparently rear-ended a pickup truck and he was thrown onto the road, where he was hit by another car, State Police said.

Both the pickup truck and the sedan that hit the victim left the scene, and State Police are seeking witnesses who can help them find the two drivers.

Killed was John Roberts, of Gates Avenue in Brentwood. He had been headed east on the parkway at 10:17 p.m. on a Kawasaki motorcycle when the accident took place, just west of Exit 36 in North Lindenhurst.

Witnesses said the pickup truck was black, and the car that hit Roberts was a dark-colored Toyota Corolla.

"Both vehicles involved fled the scene, continuing east on the Southern State Parkway without stopping," a Friday State Police report said.

State Police asked witnesses or drivers to contact them at 631-231-6389 or 631-756-3300 "if any driver felt their vehicle may have struck something or may have witnessed this accident."
