Natalie Maloney, 14, critical after being hit by SUV

A 14-year-old girl was in critical condition Monday morning after she was struck by a sport utility vehicle while attempting to cross Nesconset Highway, Route 347, on the Nesconset-St. James border late Sunday, Suffolk County police said. Videojournalist: Stringer News Service (July 29, 2013)

A Ronkonkoma teenager remained in critical but stable condition Monday after she was struck by a sport utility vehicle while attempting to cross Route 347 late Sunday to meet friends, Suffolk police said.

Natalie Maloney, 14, and a girlfriend were walking from Maloney's home to a gas station about a mile away when she was struck by a 2012 Chevrolet Suburban about 11:40 p.m. in what police said was an accident.

The girls, police said, reached the median of Route 347 at Middle Country Road, a busy intersection on the border of St. James and Nesconset. Maloney's friend stopped, but police said Maloney did not and walked into the westbound lanes against the traffic lights.

"The driver saw Ms. Maloney and attempted to swerve to avoid her," Deputy Insp. Thaddeus Nieves said. "She attempted to dart back to the median and . . . [ended up in] the path of the vehicle, where she was struck."

Maloney was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she remained Monday.

The Suburban's driver, Domiciano Rubi, 64, of Brentwood, has not been, and is not expected to be, charged, with any crimes, Nieves said. The Suburban was impounded for a safety inspection.

The accident occurred about an hour after a 911 caller reported that a group of teenagers were playing "chicken" by lying down on the eastbound lanes of Middle Country Road, Nieves said. The two incidents are not related, he said.

Police said anyone with information about the crash may call Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.
