Asleep at the wheel, driver in Hamptons charged with DWI, police say

A Southampton man who was asleep at the wheel at a green traffic light faces a felony drunken driving charge, Southampton Town police said Monday.

Nelson Asitimbay, 22, was stopped at a "steady green traffic light" at the intersection of Flanders Road and Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays about 2:44 a.m. Monday, police said.

Officers investigating at the scene found Asitimbay to be intoxicated and he was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a felony.

Arraignment information was not immediately available.
