Bridge work will force the nighttime closing of Sunrise Highway in one direction at Route 231 in North Babylon for about the next month, the state Department of Transportation said Friday.
The work on the Route 231 bridge will result in the following closing, DOT said:
Full nighttime closure of the westbound Sunrise Highway mainline begins on Monday, June 11, and will continue each night, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., for about two weeks. Traffic will be detoured to the Sunrise Highway service road.
Full nighttime closure of eastbound Sunrise Highway mainline is anticipated to begin in late June once the westbound work is completed, and will continue each night, Monday through Friday between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., for about two weeks. Traffic will be detoured to the Sunrise Highway service road.
Off-peak, single travel lane closures on the eastbound and/or westbound Sunrise Highway service roads will be in effect as needed 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Monday, June 11, and will continue as needed for about four weeks.
The state said bad weather could cancel, postpone, or prolong the delays.
Motorists were urged to drive carefully through the work zone and follow the posted detour signs.
