Smithtown honors dredging crew for saving workers

Town of Smithtown officials on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, honored members of a dredging crew and others who rescued five town employees whose vessel overturned on the Nissequogue River. The Dec. 12 incident occurred as three town bay constables and two parks employees collected channel markers at the head of the river. The dredgers, a team of seven who worked for Bay Shore-based Gibson & Cushman, "reacted without hesitation or concern for their own well-being," Town Supervisor Ed Wehrheim said. "This could have gone really bad, really quickly."
