No one injured in fire at Middle Island pet crematory

A blaze that erupted at a pet cemetery crematory building in Middle Island does not appear to have criminal origins, officials said Saturday.

Middle Island Fire department firefighters responded to the blaze at the Regency Forest Pet Memorial Cemetery and Crematory, 760 Middle Country Rd., on Friday at 7:52 p.m. They were joined by firefighters from five other departments, officials said.

No animals or humans were injured, but a firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, a police department spokesman said Saturday.

Suffolk police arson investigators "are trying to pinpoint an origin" of the fire, the spokesman said.

"There was a lot of destruction," he said.
