Northport man dies of injuries in one-car crash

A Northport man critically injured Sunday when his car struck a tree along Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge died early Friday morning at Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Douglas Caldwell, 47, of Layne Way, hospitalized in critical condition since the accident Sunday, died of his injuries at 12:37 a.m., Suffolk County police said.

Police said Caldwell was injured when he lost control of the 2005 Nissan he was driving eastbound on the highway at 4:10 a.m. Sunday, entering the center divider area, striking a tree -- and overturning.

Responding officers and witnesses attempted to pull Caldwell from the vehicle, but were unsuccessful. Police said volunteer firefighters from the Commack Fire Department finally extricated Caldwell, who was taken to Stony Brook.

Police said the accident remains under investigation and detectives ask anyone with information about the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
