A motorist who crashed into a tree Thursday morning on the Northern State Parkway in Dix Hills was extricated by firefighters and taken to a hospital, officials said.
The crash occurred about 3 a.m. in the eastbound lanes between Deer Park Avenue and Commack Road, according to Steve Silverman, a spokesman for the Dix Hills Fire Department.
He said firefighters used heavy rescue tools to cut away the roof and doors and push back the dashboard to free the driver.
The driver was taken to Huntington Hospital in stable condition, he said.
State Police said the driver told responding troopers that he fell asleep at the wheel.
His car, a 1991 Ford Mustang, “was demolished,” Trooper Frank Bandiero said.
