A seventh-grade Northport Middle School football player was airlifted Monday with a head injury from Huntington’s Finley Middle School to Stony Brook University Hospital, fire officials said.

The student, who was conscious, suffered the injury after a collision during a game between his school and Finley, Greenlawn Fire Department Chief Kurt Allen said. The boy appeared fine just after the hit, but then was checked out by a Huntington school district team doctor when he appeared to be suffering from some problems, Allen said.

“After evaluation, we determined the student should receive appropriate treatment,” Allen said.

The Greenlawn Fire Department was called just after 6 p.m., Allen said.

The team doctor for Finley “evaluated a student that went down” during the game, said Georgia McCarthy, Huntington school district’s athletic director.

“The team doctor followed the protocol of evaluating the child and contacting emergency services,” she said. It’s Huntington school district policy for a doctor to be present for all football games, McCarthy said.
