At the urging of the Suffolk County Police Department, the Patchogue village board of trustees plans to hold a public hearing next month to discuss increased traffic on Railroad Avenue.

County police officials wrote the village this week asking leaders to consider making Railroad Avenue between Main and South streets a one-way street for southbound traffic.

Traffic became an issue last month with the opening of the $5 million Emporium entertainment establishment at 9 Railroad Ave. It stays open as late as 4 a.m.

The venue, which has a restaurant, small bowling alley, concert stage and dance floor, was designed to help revitalize the downtown district, officials said.

"It is our belief that restricting traffic on this roadway will not only enhance the safety of motorists and pedestrians, but will enhance the safety of the establishment's patrons and employees," police officials wrote.

Police officials also wrote that "restricting traffic flow on the roadway will provide emergency personnel with greater access to the establishment and surrounding areas."

Village Mayor Paul Pontieri agrees redirecting traffic would be productive. "It's a solution that solves two problems: It helps with the congestion of traffic at Emporium, and it should move traffic along Main Street," he said.

Parking at the establishment has been a village concern as there is limited nearby parking. Some residents have complained to the board about increased litter, noise and patrons parking on residential streets.

The village is looking to rearrange and acquire properties to accommodate parking, Pontieri said. The hearing is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 at village hall.
