A Copiague man was listed in critical condition Monday after his boat stopped suddenly on the Great South Bay Sunday night and he was ejected, Suffolk police said.

Paul Baril, 41, remained at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip Monday with a head injury, officials said.

Baril was operating a 1985 Talon speed boat on the Great South Bay near Cedar Beach and Tanner Park at about 9 p.m. Sunday when the boat suddenly stopped, possibly after striking a sand bar, police said. Baril's friend, Derek Scudiero, was operating his boat alongside Baril's vessel at the time. Scudiero first helped Baril back into the injured man's speed boat, but it began to sink. Scudiero then helped the victim onto his boat.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said they responded to the scene of the accident Sunday night.

"It appears one boat was following another boat at a high rate of speed south of Tanner Park in the Lindenhurst area, when the one boat that was following ran aground," said Command Duty Officer Mark Averill, of the U.S. Coast Guard Long Island Sound Sector Sunday night.
