Pedestrian fatally hit in Middle Island

A 66-year-old Middle Island man walking along Middle Country Road Sunday evening was struck by a car and killed, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Patrick Iengo was walking eastbound on Middle Country Road, Route 25, when Melinda Johnson, 30, of Middle Island, struck him at 8:30 p.m. Johnson told police she never saw Iengo before her 2011 Chevrolet Malibu hit him.

Iengo died at the scene.

Police said Johnson was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson for a precautionary examination and was later released.

The car was impounded for a safety check. No charges were filed in the accident, though police said the investigation is continuing and are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
