Pedestrian hit by car, killed in Ronkonkoma

A pedestrian on her way to work was killed Monday morning while crossing Veterans Memorial Highway in Ronkonkoma, police said.

Aurea Sepeda, 73, of Central Islip, was crossing the highway at 6:18 a.m. at the 5th Avenue intersection when she was hit by a westbound 2002 Nissan, Suffolk police said.

Sepeda, who was headed to her part-time job at a bus company, was taken by ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where she died a short time later, police said.

The Nissan driver, Desmond Daniels, 24, of Holbrook, was not injured.

Daniels had the green light and was not exceeding the speed limit, police said.

"It was dark when the accident happened," Det. Sgt. Bryan McMenemy said. "Apparently she was wearing dark clothing, and the driver didn't see her."

The crash is under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
