Woman struck and killed in Bay Shore, police say

A pedestrian died Wednesday night in Bay Shore after being hit by a vehicle on Fifth Avenue, Suffolk County police said.

A southbound 2018 Toyota C-HR struck Vanessa Thomas, 65, of Bay Shore,  in the road about 10:30 p.m., police said in a news release. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota, Derrick Clarke, 38, of Bay Shore, remained at the scene and was not injured, police said. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

An investigation is underway and detectives ask anyone with information to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
