Police investigate pickup truck found in water off Center Moriches

Emergency responders answering a 911 call at a boat ramp in Center Moriches late Tuesday found a pickup truck submerged in the water, but the truck owner, found walking nearby, told police he'd loaned the vehicle to a friend and didn't know how it got there.

No one has been charged in the incident, which Suffolk County police said remains under investigation.

Police said divers searched the vehicle before it was removed from the water and said they found it unoccupied.

The incident occurred off a boat ramp at the end of Union Avenue and was reported in a 911 call at 10:30 p.m. Police said 7th Precinct, Emergency Services Unit and Marine Bureau officers all responded, as did volunteers from the Center Moriches Fire Department.

The depth of the water where the vehicle was found was not immediately clear. The area is located between Senix Creek and Areskonk Creek.

Police did not identify the vehicle owner, but said he was found "walking in the area."

Police said the owner claimed he'd loaned the truck to a friend. Police said there was damage to the dock, but did not detail that damage.
