Police: 2 seriously hurt in Calverton crash

Two people were seriously injured Tuesday after a 19-year-old man lost control of his car and collided with a pickup truck, then hit another car head-on in front of the Calverton National Cemetery, Riverhead Town police said.

The accident occurred on Route 25, Middle Country Road, at 6:23 p.m. The driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured, police said.

Police said Charles A. Cali, 19, of Calverton, was driving his 2008 Toyota Camry eastbound on Route 25 when he veered into the westbound lane, striking a 2002 Chevy pickup driven by Shawn K. Caffrey, 44, of Miller Place. The Camry then struck a 2014 Kia Optima head-on, police said.

Cali and the driver of the Kia, identified by police as Sheryl A. Mullins, 48, of Miller Place, both needed to be extricated by volunteers from the Wading River Fire Department. Both were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious but stable condition, according to police.

Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call detectives at 631-727-4500.
