Police: Bicyclist dies after being hit by car on Long Island Expressway's south service road in Brentwood

A bicyclist was killed in Brentwood Wednesday morning when he rode in front of a sport utility vehicle, Suffolk police said.

Amilcar Mejia Alvarado, 22, was headed south on Washington Avenue when he was struck by a Ford Escape traveling east on the Long Island Expressway south service road at 7:45 a.m., police said.

Alvarado, of Brentwood, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Ford driver, Ginger D'Amato, 36, of Kings Park, was not injured. Her vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Third Precinct detectives ask anyone with information to call them at 631-854-8352.
