A bicyclist from East Patchogue was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash Monday evening in Holbrook and now police are searching for a large commercial truck investigators believe struck the man.

The truck likely has damage to a passenger-side mirror, Suffolk County police said.

The crash occurred on eastbound Veterans Memorial Highway, just west of Coates Avenue, at 8:55 p.m.

The bicyclist, identified by police as Bradley J. Samuel, 43, was headed east when he was struck by the eastbound vehicle. Samuel was taken by Holbrook Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is in critical condition with head injuries, police said.

Police said Vehicular Crime Unit detectives believe the vehicle that struck Samuel is a large commercial truck with "oversized" mirrors -- and that the passenger-side mirror was damaged in the crash.

It was not clear if there were witnesses to the accident -- or if investigators recovered evidence from the truck at the scene. Police are asking anyone with information about the vehicle, its owner or its driver to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

All calls will remain confidential, police said.
