Police cruiser hits, injures bicyclist in Huntington Station, cops say

A marked police cruiser struck a man on a bicycle in Huntington Station on Tuesday evening, sending him to the hospital with serious injuries, Suffolk police said.

Two Suffolk County officers, who were responding to a call to assist another officer, had their vehicle emergency lights on as they headed north on New York Avenue and hit a bicyclist crossing the street, police said. The collision occurred about 5:10 p.m., just north of May Street, police said.

Miguel Angel Gaitan, 64, of Huntington Station, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said.

The two officers were evaluated at Huntington Hospital and released, police said.

The Second Precinct police vehicle was impounded for a safety check, officials said. Other details were not released.
