Suffolk County police were investigating early Thursday a single-car accident in the Village of the Branch that seriously injured the driver.
A police spokeswoman said the driver, a woman, lost control as she was driving west on Middle Country Road east of Route 111 at about 1:40 a.m.
Her 2014 Chevrolet Cruze hit a brick light column in front of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, slowed then struck a tree and overturned, the spokeswoman said.
The driver was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was in serious condition, police said. Her name is being withheld pending notification of family.
There were no passengers, police said.
Middle Country Road between Terry Road and Route 111 was closed until about 6:30 a.m., as police completed their investigation and crews worked to clear the crash scene, the spokeswoman said.
The car was impounded for a safety check and detectives ask anyone with information to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452 or call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477.
