A remote-control drone caught fire and flew into the sides of two buildings Tuesday night in Sag Harbor before crashing on a deserted part of Main Street, police said.
Police said the device's battery sparked the early evening fire, causing the drone aircraft to go out of control.
"It could have been a lot worse," said Sag Harbor police Sgt. Rob Drake, noting usually there are people out walking in the early evening.
The drone crashed in the street, shattering into pieces. An employee from a nearby store doused the fire with an extinguisher, Drake said.
No injuries were reported.
The unidentified operator had been using the drone to shoot video of the condominiums that occupy the former Bulova Watch Factory.
