A Flanders man who was a passenger in a car stopped by State Police was arrested after he yelled obscenities at troopers and bumped one in the chest with his elbow, State Police said Monday.

Just after midnight Saturday, two troopers on County Route 24 in Southampton noticed a broken taillight on a 1993 Chevrolet and pulled the car over.

As the troopers tried to interview the driver, the passenger started yelling obscenities at them.

Kevin Smith, 34, of 207 Riverside Ave., Flanders, prevented the driver from giving his information to the troopers, a State Police report said.

Smith got out of the car and hit a trooper in the chest with his elbow.

"Smith continued to be combative until cuffed by the troopers," the report said.

Smith was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
