Suffolk County police Saturday morning released the identities of the two men killed, and the mother and child critically injured in a head-on crash Friday evening in Deer Park.

Robert Fattibene, 53, of Grandview Lane in Smithtown, and Herver Leonel Garcia Munoz, 32, of Macarthur Avenue in Brentwood, were pronounced dead at the scene Friday by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Fattibene was driving a 2001 Dodge Durango northbound on Commack Road when he crossed over into the southbound lane and collided with a 1999 Nissan Altima, driven by Garcia Munoz, whose vehicle was traveling southbound on Commack Road, near Suburban Avenue, at approximately 6:35 p.m., police said.

Yesenia Marilu Martinez Vasquez, 24, a passenger in the Nissan, was taken by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital. Her 3-year-old child, Justin Martinez, who is also Garcia Munoz’s son, was taken by North Babylon Rescue to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

Both the mother and child were listed in critical condition as of 3 a.m. Saturday morning, police said.

Traffic was diverted away from the scene for hours as police investigated amid the severely mangled vehicles well into the night.

Residents said cars commonly speed in the area and crashes are a concern.

The vehicles were impounded for safety checks, and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
