Police: Shirley man hit, killed crossing William Floyd Parkway

A 79-year-old man was struck by a car and killed as he crossed William Floyd Parkway in Shirley on Monday, Suffolk County police said.

Police said the 94-year-old driver of the car that struck Fred Mahnken, of Shirley, was not injured in the crash.

Police said Mahnken was crossing the parkway near Lawrence Road at about 11:20 a.m. when he was struck by a 1999 Oldsmobile driven northbound by Aniello Scotti, of Shirley.

Scotti remained at the scene and was not charged.

His car was impounded for a safety check, police said.

Police said Mahnken was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are asking anyone with information about the fatal crash to call Seventh Squad detectives at 631-852-8752.
