Police use stop strips to arrest driver fleeing DWI checkpoint, cops say

Police used stop strips to catch a 27-year-old man who fled a drunken-driving enforcement stop early Sunday on Main Road in Jamesport, authorities said.

Jovan Azon Bailey, of Coram, was arrested by Riverhead Town Police after being stopped with the assistance of police from Southold. He was charged by Riverhead police with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, second-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer and with reckless driving.

He faces additional charges in Southold, police said.

Police said the initial stop was instituted by officers at a STOP DWI enforcement zone on Main Road, Route 25, in Jamesport at 3:38 a.m.

Instead of stopping, Bailey led officers on a pursuit east into Southold, police said.

Southold police deployed stop sticks to flatten the vehicle tires, stopping Bailey.

Arraignment information was not immediately available.
