A phone poll has been taken in the 1st Congressional District posing a matchup between Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) and state Sen. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley).
Bishop said he heard about the poll from constituents but thought it was a GOP effort to "test the waters." Zeldin and Republican officials, who'd also heard of the calls, denied involvement.
On May 13, a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee operative, Greg Gutierrez, filed a request at the Suffolk County election board for records on the frequency of Zeldin's past voting. Reached by phone, Gutierrez said Zeldin "was on a list" of records sought -- but had no other details.
Bishop called Gutierrez's request "new information" to him, and said he'd ask the DCCC about it. Zeldin spokesman Chris Molluso said Zeldin is "100 percent focused on doing his Senate job."-- Rick Brand
