A prayer service for the safe return of Sister Eileen Christie, a member of Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood and last heard from July 6 while visiting Austria, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony of Padua Church in East Northport.
Sister Eileen, 72, a retired St. Anthony’s High School teacher, wrote July 6 in an email of her plans to head out to a supermarket in Hallstatt, Austria, to buy food, said her nephew Bill Freda of Valley Stream.
After hearing no further word, he called her lodgings in Innsbruck, which was her next destination, on July 11, only to hear that she had not arrived as expected on July 9.
He then called her hostel in Hallstatt, he said, and was told she had not been seen there since July 6 and her belongings were still in her room.
Local police have been investigating, Freda said, with information relayed to him via the U.S. State Department’s liaison in Vienna. He said he’s gotten word that there has been no credit card activity since July 6. Also, Freda said, his aunt was not traveling with a cellphone, which could have been tracked.
The State Department said: “If a U.S. citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities and cooperate fully in their search efforts. . . . We have no further comment at this time.”
Christie, an avid hiker and swimmer, is a veteran solo traveler, her nephew said.
Anyone wishing to say a prayer on Wednesday is asked to call the church or speak with someone before the service. For more information visit the St. Anthony of Padua Parish website.
