Police have confirmed that the body of a Lindenhurst man who had been reported missing on Saturday was recovered Monday morning in the Great South Bay.

The body of Andrew Weis, 48, was found about half-mile south of Copiague Harbor, Suffolk County police said in a release.

Weis had been alone when he boarded a 13-foot dinghy and was believed to be on his way to the Anchorage Yacht Club on the Great South Bay, west of the Robert Moses Causeway, for the evening “to gather and hang out with friends,” the Coast Guard said Sunday.

Weis’ family declined comment Monday night.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Tyler Locatis said Sunday that Weis left Gilgo Beach about 5:30 p.m. for the 25-minute trip to the club. Suffolk police said the dinghy washed up on Venetian Shores Park next to the club about 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

Based on damage to the boat, detectives said they believe Weis was involved in an accident.

A total of 134 square nautical miles was searched, from Amityville to Heckscher State Park, the Coast Guard said.

Detectives asked anyone with information to call 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
