All westbound travel lanes of Sunrise Highway and access to eastbound Sunrise Highway from the westbound Montauk Highway will be closed for the next three nights in the area of the Oakdale Merge between Oakdale and Great River in Islip town, the state Department of Transportation said Tuesday.
The closures will be in effect each night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Westbound Sunrise Highway/New York Route 27 drivers will be detoured to the Sunrise Highway westbound north service road, officials said. Those heading westbound on Montauk Highway/New York Route 27A will not be able to access eastbound Sunrise Highway.
The westbound Sunrise Highway closure is needed to make repairs to the Carleton Avenue Bridge over Sunrise Highway that was hit by a truck last spring, officials said. The eastbound Sunrise Highway closure from westbound Montauk Highway is needed to finish repaving a damaged section of Montauk Highway that deteriorated during the winter weather, officials said. Work was postponed last week due to inclement weather.
Depending on the progress made, the closure may only last two nights, the department said.
