A Riverhead man was charged Sunday with drunken driving after he was found hiding in a wooded area near a road where his Isuzu had overturned, Riverhead Town police said Monday.
Sebastian Membreno, 22, was arrested by Riverhead police after they responded around 11 p.m. to a report of an overturned vehicle on Sound Avenue, west of Route 105 in Riverhead, police said in a news release Monday.
Police found a 1998 Isuzu that had overturned several times and hit several trees on the north side of the road before coming to a stop on its driver side. Membreno fled and was located in a wooded area on the north side of the road with the assistance of the Riverhead K-9 unit, police said.
His passenger Jesus Bonilla, 40, of Riverhead, was ejected from the vehicle and was found conscious, lying on the ground on the north side of the road. He suffered lacerations to his back, police said.
Both Bonilla and Membreno were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for medical evaluation. Membreno suffered a severe laceration to his right arm that required stitches.
Following his discharge from the hospital, Membreno will be taken to police headquarters and arraigned, police said.
