A Massapequa woman was seriously injured Tuesday night in East Northport when she backed into a car at a traffic light, then drove off and hit a utility pole, Suffolk police said.
Shannon Hanly, 28, was in serious condition at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.
Traffic was stopped at the intersection of Jericho Turnpike and Larkfield Road when she backed her Jeep into a Honda behind her just before 6:50 p.m., said Det. Sgt. Scott Welshimer of the Second Precinct.
"It was very minor damage, no injuries," he said.
But for some reason, she took off, going north on Larkfield until she lost control and hit a large utility pole just south of Zoranne Drive, Welshimer said. That is about a fifth of a mile from the Jericho Turnpike intersection.
Hanly was not able to talk to detectives, Welshimer said.
He said detectives are puzzled by her actions and ask any witnesses to come forward.
The Jeep was impounded for a safety check, and there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol inside as of Tuesday night, Welshimer said.
"We just want to know what happened," he said.
Police ask anyone with information on the crash to call 631-854-8252.
