Smithtown water main break leads to sinkhole

The incident happenedin the area of Mount Pleasant Boulevard, just north of 347.

A water main break on a Smithtown road early Tuesday created a gaping hole that swallowed a sport utility vehicle, Suffolk County officials said.

No one was injured in the incident on Mount Pleasant Road. The driver called 911 but managed to get the vehicle out, police said.

Water service was restored about noon to 26 customers who had been without water since 3:30 a.m., when the 12-inch pipe burst beneath the street, Suffolk water authority spokesman Tim Motz said.

The flooding caused a portion of the road between Daisy Lane and Cambridge Drive to collapse, Motz said.

The cause of the break wasn't immediately known. Repairs on the road were expected to be completed Tuesday night.
