Longtime president of Southampton police union retires

The longtime head of Southampton Town Police Department’s labor union is retiring, the organization announced on Jan. 24.

Southampton Town Patrolman’s Benevolent Association president Kevin Gwinn, a detective, is retiring after 30 years with the police department and 22 years on the union board. During his tenure, he helped found a program to support officers dealing with traumatic events, worked in recovery efforts at Ground Zero and received many accolades, according to the PBA.

Officer Erik Breitwieser will succeed Gwinn as president of the organization.

“His aggressive approach in representing our some 350 active and retired members proved to be the standard for many years,” Breitwieser said in a news release.

Gwinn was honored at a police department awards ceremony on Jan. 31.
