A single-car crash on the Southern State Parkway in West Babylon killed the driver early Wednesday, after his car struck a utility pole and tree, and the tree fell on the ejected driver, State Police said.

Eugene Ellis, 37, of Islip Terrace, was pronounced dead at the accident scene, just west of Exit 37, Belmont Avenue, in the parkway’s westbound lanes, police said.

The accident happened at about 4:19 a.m., and investigators said Ellis’ Hyundai Sonata drove off the roadway and entered the north shoulder, striking a light pole and ejecting the driver. The vehicle then struck a tree, which fell onto the driver, according to a news release.

Ellis was the only one in the car at the time of the crash, which closed at least two lanes of the roadway until the investigation was completed about 7:15 a.m., police said.
