His owner went back to El Salvador, leaving the dog chained — and, facing starvation — behind a Brentwood home, authorities said. Fortunately, the 4-year-old pit bull got a reprieve on Tuesday, rescued by investigators.

The Suffolk SPCA said investigators found the dog tangled in a heavy chain, with no food or water available, and suffering from a leg wound. The pit bull was transported to Grady Animal Hospital where it was found to be in otherwise good health.

The animal will soon be ready for adoption.

It was not clear when the owner abandoned the dog. But SPCA Chief Roy Gross said in a statement the owner chained the pit bull in the backyard, then left for El Salvador — “with no plans to return.”
