SPCA: Hauppauge woman accused of neglecting horses; help sought caring for animals

A Hauppauge woman faces animal cruelty charges after authorities found her three horses sick and emaciated, the Suffolk County SPCA said Wednesday.

Chief Roy Gross of the animal protection group said all three horses are recovering, receiving the proper attention and care after being removed from a Manorville boarding facility on Monday and Tuesday.

One of the horses, removed Monday, was found to be so sick and emaciated that Gross isn't sure it will survive.

"We're still hoping it will make it," Gross said.

The other two horses, also neglected and removed Tuesday, have a better chance of survival, based on the condition they were in, Gross said.

The owner of the horses, Helen Malazzo, 61, was given an appearance ticket Tuesday and is due to appear at First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 5.

Gross said his agency could use the public's help in caring for the horses. Donations can be made by calling 631-382-7722 or by visiting
