Suffolk County police are investigating a crash that killed a Melville man who was walking on the Long Island Expressway on Wednesday night.

Police in a news release Thursday identified the victim as Stephen Puleo, 52, who was walking westbound on the LIE, west of Exit 49, at 10:30 p.m. when he was hit by a U.S. Postal Service tractor trailer, driven by Russell A. Davenport of Northport.

Davenport, 62, remained at the scene and attempted to assist the victim, police said.

A police spokeswoman Thursday said no criminality is suspected.

Puleo was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

A safety check of the tractor trailer was conducted at the scene and the investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252. All calls will be kept confidential.
