Suffolk police have arrested a Centereach man who, they said, was tampering with red-light cameras in Ronkonkoma to prevent them from documenting traffic violations.
Stephen Ruth, 42, of Stewart Circle, was arrested at his home by Sixth Precinct Crime Sections officers at about 4 p.m. Tuesday based on anonymous tips about a video posted on social media that showed a man manipulating the red-light camera, police said.
He is charged with four counts of third-degree criminal tampering and four counts of second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, both misdemeanors, police said, and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip. His attorney could not be reached for comment.
Ruth was using an expandable pole to tilt the camera upward so it would not capture motorists at the intersection, police said.
Police said Ruth tampered with a camera on Ocean Avenue and the Long Island Expressway South Service Road in Ronkonkoma on Friday and Monday. And on Tuesday, police said, he reoriented two cameras at Hawkins Avenue and the Long Island Expressway South Service Road in Ronkonkoma.
